Default Teen Pregnancy and It's Effects

The teen birth rate is slowly falling, there are still an estimated one million teen pregnancies in the United States alone. About 85% of these pregnancies are unplanned, which in any population can increase the risk for problems. The biggest risk for teen mothers is delaying prenatal care or worse, 7.2% received no care at all.The reason for lack of prenatal care is usually delayed pregnancy testing, denial or even fear of telling others about the pregnancy. Most states have a health department or University clinic where prenatal care is free or low cost and patient confidentiality is very important, meaning no one can tell the teen mother's family.Teenage mothers are less likely to gain adequate weight during their pregnancy, leading to Low Birth weight which is associated with infant and childhood disorders and a high rate of infant mortality. Low-birth weight babies are more likely to have organs that are not fully developed, which can result in complications such as bleeding in the brain, respiratory distress syndrome, and intestinal problems.Children born to teenage mothers are less likely to receive proper nutrition, health care, and cognitive and social stimulation. As a result, they may have an underdeveloped intellect and attain lower academic achievement.

Teen pregnancy is a huge problem in th UK the 'kids having kids' syndrome. We have a Tc programme here called the Jeremy Kyle show and everyday there are a constant stream of teenage girls coming on with young lads for paternity tests, as it never seems to be certain who the father of the baby is.

It is such a shame I think to get into having children so early and miss out on having a young carefree life, but you are right Sonee just because it is is not an ideal situation does not mean that we turn our backs on the mothers and the babies who can be severely disadvantaged. If we do not make an effort to nurture these kids of kids, then the cycle is likely to repeat itself for ever more.

I was glad to know though that at least in the USA teenage pregnancies are decreasing.

You are right Saffy it is such a shame because such type of kids have no future and life due to lack of parental care and i am also happy to know that the rate of teenage pregnancies are decreasing in the USA.

This is a subject that I know quite a lot about. A friend of mines daughter got pregnant when she was just 15! It was a terrible time and very sad when the arrival of a baby should be a happy occasion. The boy (who was only 14!) ran for the hills and she was left literally holding the baby. When she was pregnant there was plenty of brave talk about her continuing her studies when the baby was born with her mum taking care of him. But that never really worked out, as her parents split over the trauma of it all and the child's granny had to go back to work. Studies were given up and she now lives in a horrible little flat on benefits. She had such promise and it is such shame, if only these girls could see it!
