That's right Peggy. Depending on your type of hair loss, treatments are available. If a medicine is causing hair loss, a different medicine might be prescribed. Recognising and treating an infection may help stop the hair loss as would correcting a hormone imbalance may prevent further hair loss.

There are medicines that may also help slow or prevent the development of common baldness. One medicine, minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine), is available without a prescription. It is applied to the scalp. Both men and women can use it. If adequate treatment is not available for your type of hair loss, you may consider trying different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement. These days they really are very sophisticated!

Hormonal changes and imbalances can also cause temporary hair loss. This could be due to pregnancy, childbirth, discontinuation of birth control pills or the onset of menopause.
Many people experience a general thinning of hair several months after a physical or emotional shock. Examples include sudden or excessive weight loss, a high fever, or a death in the family.
Hair-pulling disorder.
Certain hairstyles. Traction hair loss can occur if the hair is pulled too tightly into hairstyles such as pigtails or cornrows.

Good blood circulation in the scalp is important in keeping hair follicles productive. The 'B' vitamins contribute to melanin, which gives hair its healthy color and also stimulates blood circulation;
Try rubbing your scalp with garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice -- you can use one out of three; do not mix any two or three. Leave it on over night (if your head gets wet you will be able to smell it). Wash it out in the morning.;
using lace wigs, it can make poeple ignore the hair loss.

there are many reasons that can cause hairloss.
Hair loss is a natural part of the body's process of renewal. As some hair falls out, new growth replaces it. However, this process may be accelerated by a number of conditions. Hormonal changes may contribute to rapid hair loss, such as during pregnancy or childbirth, or even when coming off the Pill. As these fluctuations in hormone levels drop off, the hair loss should clear up, so the condition is only temporary. In a recent study, hormone levels were studied in both male and female patients experiencing severe hair loss. The research points towards a complex interaction between sex and thyroid hormones that may lead to the condition.

Stress is another factor linked to hair loss. While it has not been proved definitively, emotional trauma has been loosely associated with hair loss, but milder strains and worries probably do the same thing. Stresses placed on the body may also cause a woman's hair to jump ship. For example, crash dieting, in which a woman loses a large amount of weight rapidly, may also cause her to lose her tresses, too. Since stress is often transient, if its cause clears up, the resultant hair loss should disappear as well.
treatment
A new drug, Propecia, is now being tested by Merck on post-menopausal women. Propecia works by blocking the conversions of testosterone into a related hormone, dihydrotestosterone that shrinks hair follicles. It has about the same success rate as Rogaine in the men and likewise the hair re-growth stops once the drug is discontinued. It is not know whether it will work as well with women's hormone profile. In addition, this drug cannot be taken while pregnant because it can cause birth defects in the urinary and genital organs of male fetuses.
if you really fall hair a lot, you can choose lace wigs for buildup. most lace wigs are made by india remy hair, so it looks very natural and shiny.

Wow now that is what I call a useful post. I have started to suffer from this problem myself (not helped by the fact that I am overweight, I am sure and therefore promoting testosterone within my endocrine system) I am definitely going to look into Propecia which sounds like it might deliver female hormones and might help with things like facial hair retardation as well.
