Are You Placing Your Baby At Risk? Patent Foramen Ovale – What You Need To Know
When a baby is developing in the uterus, the heart’s two upper chambers (atria) are connected by a hole through the septum (the wall of muscle that separates them). This hole must be present in the fetus as part of the system that detours blood away from the lungs during gestation.
This hole is called the foramen ovale. It normally closes shortly after birth when the lungs are working. When it fails to close, it is said to be “patent,” which simply means “open.”
