Default Are You Placing Your Baby At Risk? Patent Foramen Ovale – What You Need To Know

When a baby is developing in the uterus, the heart’s two upper chambers (atria) are connected by a hole through the septum (the wall of muscle that separates them). This hole must be present in the fetus as part of the system that detours blood away from the lungs during gestation.

This hole is called the foramen ovale. It normally closes shortly after birth when the lungs are working. When it fails to close, it is said to be “patent,” which simply means “open.”

Great information, thanks! I know that when a baby is born with a problem like this it is often very hard for the parents in their shocked state to take in what is being told to them about the condition. Having your written explanation would be very helpful as they could take their time and read it over and over until they could take it in.

It is also important to say that a child born with this condition will have treatment options and most will go on to be 'fixed' and lead normal lives with not problems. Still a t the time, it is a big shock for the parents, thanks again for the useful info!
