Default What is the study of Urology?

In a word waterworks! Urology is the discipline that deals with the urinary tract in both men and women as well as the reproductive system in men. Urologists are surgeons and unusually, in addition are also clinical doctors unlike other specialities where this work is divided (neurologist and neurosurgeon) They not only examine and diagnose water works problems but will also perform surgeries and procedures, which may be diagnostic, or may be designed to help resolve problems. As with many other, within this speciality, there are several sub-specialities. Some urologists will focus specifically on congenital defects of the urinary tract or reproductive system in children, for instance. Others may specialise in cancer of the urinary tract, or work may work with gynecologists to resolve issues exclusive to women, like stress incontinence (the urgent need to pass water).

Quite right and my poor old dad has been under one for almost 18 months now following a stroke. At the time of the stroke he had a catheter put in and when the time came to remove it it was found that his prostate was enlarged and pressing on the urethra stopping the bladder from emptying normally. He had to go on pills to reduce the size of the prostate and tried three times to go without the catheter. Finally last week he succeeded! They urologist was brilliant with him and in fact was the only one who did not say he needed the catheter for life.
