Default Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)/Enlarged Prostate

BPH seems to commonly afflict aging men. I believe approximatley 50% of men experience some symptoms of BPH by the age of 50. The symptoms of BPH include urinary frequency, incomplete urination (urinary drip) and urinary retention. Treatment options for BPH include pharmacological treatment with drugs include alpha-blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Of course, prior to initiating pharmacological treatment, it would be wise to consider lifestyle changes. If both lifestyle changes and pharmacological treatment do not work, there are surgical options available. I think it would be a good idea to explore all 3 of these further: 1) Lifestyle, 2) Drug treatment, 3) surgical options.

Hi Amo

My dad suffers from this and he has had problems in so much as a catheter that was inserted following his stroke in January cannot be removed because every time it is, the enlarged prostate presses on the urethra and stops the flow of urine which leads to retention of urine. It looks now as though coupled with the enlarge d prostate the fact that his bladder has not worked normally for 6 months might mean that he will either have to have a permanent catheter or a surpa pubic drain and bag inserted into his bladder. His urologists has said that there are various methods of shrinking the prostate, shaving bits off it or an injection that should shrink it. I will let you know how we go on.
