Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is caused when airflow is completely blocked as you sleep, stopping air from entering the lungs. This often occurs many times during the night causing sleepiness during the day.

Figures from the UK, estimate that around 4% of men and 2% of women have obstructive sleep apnoea. The onset of obstructive sleep apnoea is most common in people aged 35 to 54 years old, although it can affect people of all ages, including children.

This cannot be emphasised enough, it is very important that if you think that you might be suffering form sleep apnoea, especially if you are over weight, you use seek medical help. It is possible for someone to stop breathing in their sleep and die, so better to get help to monitor the situation and in the worst case scenario, have oxygen at night.

I found these useful guidelines to whether or not you might be suffering from OSA.
You are more likely to have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea if:
• You are a man and middle-aged
• You are a woman past your menopause and not on HRT
• You are overweight, with a neck size of 17 or over;
• You have a small airway, a set back or small lower jaw, large tonsils or a large tongue.
• You are a child with a particular condition / disability or are morbidly obese.
It is possible you may also increase the risk of developing or worsening the condition if you drink alcohol before bed, use sedatives or smoke. People with nasal blockage may also be more at risk.
What are the symptoms?
The most common signs of OSA are snoring and interrupted breathing often noticed by a partner while asleep, and sleepiness when awake.
This can be remembered using “the triple S”:

• Snoring when asleep
• Stopping breathing or Struggling to breathe when asleep
• Sleepy when awake

If you think that this is you, then you need to see the doctor.

Some other tell tale signs that someone might be suffering in this way is:

Snoring (often loudly)
Repeated pauses in breathing (apnoeas and hypopnoeas)
Feeling of choking
Tossing and turning (restlessness)
Sudden jerky body movements
Needing to go to the toilet often (nocturia)
Chest discomfort
