My husband played rugby to a high standard. He tells a story of when he started taking the game seriously, an old player told him that in later life he would remember his rugby career as he would feel all the old injuries. Of course he laughed it off, but now in his mid fifties he shows all the signs of developing rheumatoid arthritis. He can tell when it is going to rain by the pain in his joints, he has injuries to his thumbs, feet, ankles, knees, neck etc, pretty well all over his body. Some days he gets up in the morning and finds it difficult to move. He does not blame his rugby career and adores the game, but his stiffness is obviously a legacy. He benefits when we go abroad and weather is warmer, so perhaps when the time comes we will retire to somewhere warm and sunny!!
