Default Are Antidepressants safe in pregancy? focus on SSRIs

The main class of drugs used to treat depression are called SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) - the common drugs in this class are: Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro, etc. There is no evidence that SSRIs in pregnancy improve maternal or infant health, and substantive evidence suggesting that they pose a risk to the fetus. Therefore, the harms of SSRIs exceed the benefits in pregnancy. Woman wanting to stop SSRIs in pregancy should taper their dose over at least a 1 week period to minimise withdrawal symptoms. It is important to stress that exercise, social support, sleep hygiene, and good nutrition are important aspects for all pregnant women, including those with symptoms of depression.

I know that there are a lot of women who are nervous of taking even so much as an aspirin while they are pregnant, Thalidomide has, I think, cast a very, long shadow. My mother suffered from terrible morning sickness when she was pregnant with me and that was at the time that Thalidomide but, thank God, did not take up the offer a prescription for the drug!

Depression though is something that you probably need to treat as the body changes during pregnancy may play havoc with an already difficult situation. I would say that very careful research and a doctor that you trust are the answer to this one.
