Default What is the medical specialty of neurology?

Neurology is the medical specialty which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the brain and nervous system. A physician who practices neurology is called a neurologist. A surgeon who operates on the brain is called a neurosurgeon.

Neurologists treat stroke patients, as well as patients with epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and hundreds of other neurological issues, some of which are acute, others of which may be ongoing, or chronic.

Default The common neurological disorders

i think it would be helpful to list and categorise each of the common neurological disorders:

1) Dementia
2) Epilepsy
3) Headache
4) Multiple Sclerosis
5) Neurological disorders associated with malnutrition
6) Parkinsons Disease
7) Stroke
8) Traumatic Brain Injuries

have i missed anything?? To gain a better understanding of each of these disorders, if we have a particular thread for each of them, it would really help.

Talking about stroke, my dad had a stroke recently and it has been interesting to see hi recover. He was completely out of it for a couple of months but is now almost back to normal, his memory is a bit shot away but he is doing maths puzzles with alarming speed and accuracy! Apparently that is a different side of the brain. It is fascinating to know that the brain when it is injured or suffers a stroke has the ability to re route its signals so that the pathways can arrive at the same function by a different route. Obviously this does not apply to a very profound brain damage but in my dad's case I think I can see this in action!
