Default Inability to taste food and whole body numbness

From early September through mid November, I was unable to taste and I had a slight numbness throughout my entire body. One day I woke up with a numbness in my mouth. By afternoon, it had spread throughout my body. It was not a tingling feeling, but like my skin was a little less sensitive. A doctor poked my skin in various places, and I was able to feel them all. If I pinched my skin, though, I couldn't feel the pain. I could not taste at all, but I could smell fine.

In mid November, the taste came back and the numbness went away. I feel completely fine.

Does anyone have any idea why I couldn't taste for 2 and a half months? The only medication I take is for hypothyroidism (synthyroid), but my doctors say everything is fine with my thyroid levels right now.

This summer, I was very fatigued and lightheaded. I had a tilt table test for POTS. The doctor said it was negative for POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), but my heart rate did go from 60 bpm when laying to 120 when standing and back to 60 when laying. However, I feel completely better now.

I'm 28 years old and don't have a history of any serious illnesses. What could be wrong? Doctors don't know

The ability to taste is directly correlated with your ability to smell. In fact, studies have shown that most people can not tell the difference between an onion and an apple when their sense of smell is cut off and they cannot see what food they are eating. Your ability to smell comes from your olfactory system and if the components your body uses to smell are damaged then your sense of smell will decrease and in turn your sense of taste will decrease. Also if you suffer from a chronically stuffy nose or clogged sinuses this can impair your taste as well, since your sense of smell is impaired. By taking over the counter medication to clear your nasal passages or sinuses in order to breath better through your nose you may increase your sensitivity to taste. It might be worth a try. I assume that the doctor has checked for other things like MS?

Thanks. During that time, I was able to smell perfectly. In fact, losing only the ability to taste with the tongue made me realize how much we rely on smell for eating. I didn't have sinus problems at that time. It's odd that it lasted for two and half months and came back.

My doctor has not checked for MS. I doubt she would now that I feel better.

Well I think that even although you do feel better you need to keep being aware of anything strange you experience. It could be just that you had a nasty virus, and we all know how difficult they are to treat, maybe there was no treatment for it and it cleared on its own. Still keep an eye on things and for any other problems that might seem unrelated. They might make up a full picture!
