Speaking as someone who is from the UK where the games are to be held and where we are in the middle of a massive financial crisis, I think that the millions that are being spent on it could be put to better use! Having said that I am all in favour of excellence in sport for its health benefits and the undoubted good effect that dedication to sport can have on the young. I do worry though about the long term health effects of sport, especially that which is hard on the joints, and I do know that many sportsmen and women end up with severe disabilities later in life. I myself used to play rugby and have arthritis in the areas of breaks and fractures that I sustained while I was playing the game. I always know when it is going to rain!!

Sport if you love a particular game can be a great way of keeping fit and the olympic athletes are a very fine example of what can be achieved. They are obviously not the ones who like me used to try to get out of sport and gym as much as they could at school! I loved swimming though but we only had an outside unheated pool so that was a bit of a limited option for me! I have a ticket for the Olvmpics and I am looking forward to the experience.
