Speaking as someone who is from the UK where the games are to be held and where we are in the middle of a massive financial crisis, I think that the millions that are being spent on it could be put to better use! Having said that I am all in favour of excellence in sport for its health benefits and the undoubted good effect that dedication to sport can have on the young. I do worry though about the long term health effects of sport, especially that which is hard on the joints, and I do know that many sportsmen and women end up with severe disabilities later in life. I myself used to play rugby and have arthritis in the areas of breaks and fractures that I sustained while I was playing the game. I always know when it is going to rain!!
