Hi there
I have a father who had a stroke and has had terrible trouble sleeping in the aftermath. He has gone from being asleep most of the time immediately following the stroke, to being unable to sleep. However, recently when my mother took him to the doctor and the doctor questioned him he asked him how much sleep he thought he should get. My father replied that he thought about 8 hours per night. The doctor laughed and said at your age (he is 80) you certainly don't need that much sleep, a more realistic target would be about 5-6 hours. I think that has helped my father a lot as now that he knows this he does not feel the concern that he did about getting 8 hours sleep a night. It is always worth getting help with this. A lot of us go through times when for one reason or another we don't sleep well, and talking it over with a sleep expert could remove some of the misconceptions that we have and possibly clear the way for a better nights sleep. Worrying about it only makes the situation worse as far as I can tell.
