That is so true. I lived in the Middle East for many years and I saw there what a community looks like that cares for all sectors of that community including the elders. They are revered for their knowledge and experience, rather than locked away in homes out of sight and out of mind. They have a lot to teach us, older people and we could enjoy their company a lot more, I think!

Increasingly in modern societies, elder care is now being provided by state or charitable institutions. The reasons for this change include decreasing family size, the greater life expectancy of elderly people, the geographical dispersion of families, and the tendency for women to be educated and work outside the home. Although these changes have affected European and North American countries first, it is now increasingly affecting Asian countries also.

I believe the decrease in values we teach in our children is the reason for this. Older civilization take great value for their elders. The native indians, old chinese civilizations, etc. These days, values of such are not encouraged that much anymore. Kids these days learn to be very independent at a young age thus when they get older, even advice from their parents / elders are no longer significant. Very sad indeed.

This is a very true thing you say, the problem is in what we are taught to value from a very early age and it is certainly true that in the UK children seem to value nothing and listen to nobody! That has been brought into focus by the recent horrible scenes on the street. I really to believe that it is all because children value nothing and nobody.
