Face and neck lift
Hi, this is an area I know quite a lot about and a face lift or neck lift might be the answer for you.
As people age, the effects of living demonstrated by gravity, exposure to the sun and the day to day stress of life can all be seen in the face. Many people develop wrinkles in the area between the nose and mouth and the jaw line grows slack, jowly and less defined while folds appear in the neck area.
A face lift (technically known as rhytidectomy) can't be used to halt the ageing process. What it offers is to "put the clock back", improving the most visible signs of ageing by removing excess fat, and tightening the underlying musculature, with re-draping of the skin of the face and neck. A face lift is often done alone or at the same time as other surgeries such as: neck lift, forehead/brow lift, under chin liposuction, or upper and/or lower eyelid surgery.
In considering the best candidate to undergo face lift surgery this would be an individual whose face and neck have begun to sag, but who still has some elasticity in their skin and a strong bone structure. Patients are normally in the age group forty to sixty, but face lifts have been successfully carried out on people who are in their seventies and eighties.
Face lifts make faces look younger and fresher, and will probably enhance self-confidence as well. However, it should be understood that a face lift will not give a totally different look, and will not be able to completely restore the look of youth. Before you decide on this surgery, you should think carefully about what your expectations are, whether or not they are realistic and candidly discuss them with your surgeon.
A face lift operation can last several hours and is performed using a combination of general (intravenous) anaesthesia and a local anaesthetic (neurolepanaesthesia). In face lift surgery, incisions are made at a level of two and four inches above the ear and then at the front of the ear, continuing around the earlobe into the natural skin crease behind the ear and then into or along the existing hairline behind the ear. In this way, scaring is almost invisible, “hidden” as it is within the hair and behind the ears.
Facelift scars will take 9 to 18 months to mature, and they will gradually become smoother and their colour will change in time from the original postoperative purple, to pink and then will eventually become whitish. After incisions have been made the plastic surgeon will lift and separate fat and skin from the underlying muscle layer. Neck skin will be lifted usually down to the level of the collarbone and across the entire neck area. After dissection of excess skin has been carried out the surgeon will also tighten the deeper musculature. This is known as submusculoaponeurotic system (SMAS).
Using the SMAS method allows face lifts greater longevity than face lifts that lift only the skin without muscle tightening. This method also gives a long lasting smooth appearance to the neck from where excess skin is trimmed and the incisions are closed. The plastic surgeon will introduce drainage tubes under the skin on each side of the face to allow blood and fluid to drain. Finally a helmet-type dressing is applied which will remain in place for 3–4 days. The drainage tubes will be removed two days postoperatively.
Neck lift rejuvenation surgery can last for several hours and is undertaken with a combination of general (intravenous) anaesthesia and local anaesthesia (neurolepanaesthesia). If endoscopic surgery is to be carried out, small incisions are made underneath the chin allowing the surgeon to tighten the muscles of the neck.
The surgeon will also often perform liposuction, using small straw-like cannulas, which are used to suction out fat cells. If you have significant excess skin around the neck, neck lift surgery may be the solution. In neck lift surgery, excess skin will be pulled up and back and the removed with incisions hidden behind the ears.
Neck lift scars will take 9 to 18 months to mature, and they will gradually become smoother and their colour will change in time from the original postoperative purple, to pink and they will eventually become whitish.
I hope that this description helps make your mind up!
