Default Dermatology has a lot to offer

I agree that the study of dermatology is very interesting and for those suffering from skin complaints like Eczema and psoriasis the discipline of dermatology has a lot to offer. Of more concern recently has been the increase in malignant melanoma a cancer of the skin that usually develops in moles and has a direct relation to exposure to the sun's UV rays. In Australia they are on top of this and even have doctors walking the beaches, giving advice and examining an suspicious skin changes that people might have. We in the Uk are less used to wall to wall sunchine and although we are all advised to use sun block and to use sun beds in moderation, the figures in the UK continue to rise and figures released for 2007 showed that unlike most malignancies, malignant melanoma is more common in women than men with a M:F ratio of 4:5. In 2007 it was the sixth most common cancer in females and the ninth in males: for both sexes combined it was the sixth most common cancer. Worrying statistics and with the hot summer we are currently having in the UK, figures could be boostred consdierably in years to come.

Unhappy

I agree that skin cancer is becoming a problem. The other day I met a woman who had terminal malignant melanoma and she was only in her 30's with young son. I know that I do not take as much care as I should in the sun and once you have a basic tan it is easy to feel that as you are not burning, no damage is being done. However I heard a doctor on the radio say the other day that whatever your age you should take care and I had always thought before that that the danger really was from exposure to the sun when you were young which then led to the development of skin cancer much later in life. Barrier creams are very good these days and I believe that you can still tan with them on, just more safely. I certainly would never think of using a sun bed as I really believe that they do a lot of damage.
