Default Gum Disease could signal mental problems.

We are always told how important it is to maintain good gum health but a new study has now come up with links between inflammation in the gums and wait for it, mental decline. It seems that inflammation of the gums can lead to inflammation of the brain, which in turn can lead to neuro-degeneration, and even dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers were studying Alzheimer's patients at New York University and made the connection when they found significantly higher levels of antibodies and inflammatory molecules in Alzheimer’s patients from diseased gums and teeth when compared to healthy people.

It has also been revealed that gum disease is one of the biggest pointers of more serious health problems, revealing that 90 per cent of people with gum disease are thought to be at risk of developing diabetes, and more worryingly, might already have diabetes but don’t realise it. It is thought that dental surgeries could become a first-line screening system for people who exhibit gum disease, especially if other risk factors for diabetes, such as being overweight or having high blood pressure are present. It is also possible that gum disease such as gingivitis might flag up the risk of other major health problems, such as cancer or heart problems.
