Botox is short for Botulinum Toxin which is actually a poison. It was found (don't ask me how!) that injecting this in small amounts would cause paralysis of the muscles it was injected into and, in the case of cosmetic botox smooth out laughter lines and other winkles. It's clinical use was initially to help those people suffering from facial tics as it would stop the muscle in the face twitching.

BOTOX® is the commercial tradename for Botulinum Toxin Type A.

Botulinum Toxin is derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.

When injected into muscles, Botulinum Toxin has a local effect. It blocks transmission between the nerve endings and muscle fibres around the injection site to cause weakness of the nearby muscle.

That is right and it is interesting to think that something that is essentially a poison is doing so much good for people who think they need it. It is very effective and in the small quantities that it is used in plastic surgery it is not toxic as it would be if it was taken in large amounts. It is a very useful tool in the anti ageing war!!

Botox is one of the many trade names for the neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large doses, the protein causes botulism, a rare paralytic illness often linked to food poisoning.
