Default Great News for heart sufferers!

I heard on the BBC just now that a tablet is being hailed as having the potential to save many lives each year. Apparently a pill that costs less than £1.50 a day has the potential to save the lives of thousands of heart failure patients, medical trials suggest.

The drug, ivabradine, is already available in the UK and is used to treat angina and it could save up to 10,000 lives each year.

The trial involved more than 6,500 people in 37 countries who already used standard treatments such as beta-blocker drugs.

Over a typical study period of two years, ivabradine cut the risk of death from heart failure by 26%.

It had a similar impact on the likelihood of patients being admitted to hospital.

Heart failure uses up 1% to 2% of the total NHS budget and direct medical costs alone amounting to £625m each year.

Unlike other treatments, such as beta-blockers, ivabradine lowers the number of heartbeats per minute without also reducing blood pressure. Although ivabradine is already available in the UK for angina - the pain caused by insufficient blood reaching the heart - it is only prescribed to about 10% of patients with the condition.

But taking a daily one pill will not cause any side effect. If it will not then it very good for heart patients.

Then other wonder drug in this respect is Aspirin taken at a dose of 75 mg per day,. not the full dose used for pain killing. A lot of patients take this and it really is said to have a lot of beneficial effects on all sorts of systems. I take one a day although my doctor has not recommended it. I think that anyone with an ulcer problem would have to be careful although you can get enterecoated ones (ones with a shiny hard coating like a smartie) for more sensitive stomachs. Ask you Doctor, anyway, if it would be Ok for you to take it.

Yes it is amazing what a little drug like that, which is really cheap to buy can do! I am always in awe of this sort of thing I am sure that when we understand the whole of what makes us tick and what is good for us and not good for us, Aspirin will be on the of drugs that is hailed as areal revelation and a real milestone for moder man.
