Children can have high blood pressure!
At the American Heart Association 49th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease, Epidemiology and Prevention in 2009 it was reported that children as young as 12 years face a significant risk of developing high blood pressure and all because their levels of vitamin D are too low!
Having low vitamin D values has long been seen as an indication of a poor lifestyle, often observed in people who are significantly overweight As children suffer more from obesity so their risk increases. Vitamin D levels can be improved by eating oily fish, getting lots of sunshine or if all else fails by taking supplements.
Low levels of vitamin D mean that you are at far greater risk of developing high blood pressure, high blood sugar or metabolic syndrome - cardiovascular and diabetes risk factors. The research found that adolescents with the low vitamin D levels had were up to four times more likely to develop serious health problem than those who had the highest vitamin D levels recorded.
